Vice-Chancellor

The Board of Trustee of the Al-Qalam University, Katsina, has appointed Professor Shehu Garki Ado as Vice-Chancellor with immediate effect. A Research Professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Ado is a consummate researcher of international repute. Born on 24th August 1957, at Garki, in Jigawa State. He attended Garki Primary School before proceeding to Government Secondary School Rano where at West African Examinations Council (WAEC) level he obtained division one in 1975. He won various prizes including that for overall best, Biology, Chemistry and Geography. Armed with a brilliant result, he began to demonstrate his quest for greatness by choosing a great institution, the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University. In October 1976 he was absorbed into the Faculty of Agriculture where he had his training and colourful career. Armed with a good bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, his almamater would not let him go and immediately after the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos State, Prof. Ado returned to take up appointment with the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University as Graduate Assistant in 1980. He attained the pinnacle of a distinguished career when in October 2001; he earned the enviable position of Professorship. He is a member of five Professional and Honours Societies.
He was pioneer Director College of Agriculture Hadejia, National Coordinator for Maize research, former Head, Department of Plant Science, former Executive Director IAR, and former National Facilitator, Crops Intensification, National Programme for Food Security, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Abuja. He is currently the National Coordinator Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa Project.
Professor Ado is a team player and a team leader as well as a community leader, a seasoned administrator, an astute communicator, a distinguished scholar and an accomplished scientist. He is an icon of no mean feat, an instant inspirational and charismatic personality, a beacon of hope who from his adulthood has unleashed his genius, energy and his know-how in the service of humanity. The University Don has more than one hundred and seventy scholarly publications to his credit. He had been on many technical committees at both national, regional, State, University and community levels. He lead the development and release of six maize varieties and collaborated in the development and release of 23 other maize varieties. He chaired the production of three books on Agro-Raw Materials in Nigeria, contributed two book chapters and published 56 peer reviewed articles in national and international journals as well as 47 papers in edited conference proceedings. He also has to his credit fourteen agricultural extension publications and reports, ten articles published in newsletters as well as forty seminar, conference, workshop and guest papers. He is a Fellow of one International and three National Institute Professional and Honours Societies namely: Fellow Agricultural Research West Africa (FARWAN), Fellow Corporate Executives of Nigeria (FICEN) a Distinguished Leadership Award for Excellence in managerial capabilities, track record of excellence, strategic management, positive vision and efficient leadership styl, Fellow Agricultural Society of Nigeria(FASN), Fellow Horticultural Society of Nigeria (FHSN) and Fellow National Institute of Marketing Of Nigeria (FNIMN).

As a lecturer, he taught nine different undergraduate and post graduate courses in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Bayero University Kano, Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. In addition, he supervised twenty seven students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Some of his PhD students are already professors.
A widely traveled man, he has been to China, India, Egypt, Saudi-Arabia, Israel, Sudan, Cameroun, Chad, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, South Africa, former Yugoslavia, parts of West-Africa and the Netherlands.
S.G. Ado’s kindness knows no bound, yet he never allows his kindness to overcome his sense of duty and responsibility.
Professor S.G. Ado is happily married to Hajia Sa’adatu, a trained teacher, an educationist, a University administrator, a social worker and a school proprietress. They are blessed with five children. Professor S.G. Ado enjoys reading, writing and adventure.
The Vice-Chancellor has assumed duty with effect May 2, 2013.
